THE LONGBOAT KEY EDUCATION CENTER WHAT: The Longboat Key Education Center provides education and recreation to residents of and winter visitors to Longboat Key, Florida, and neighboring areas in Sarasota and Manatee counties. We offer more than 100 courses in terms lasting from four to eight weeks as well as a lecture series, a performing arts series, one-day workshops and guided day-long trips to points of interest throughout Southwest Florida. The Center is in session from mid-October to mid-April. Our courses and other programs appeal to many diverse interests and range from yoga, tai chi, and bridge to opera, foreign affairs, and book clubs. All courses are non-credit, and there are no prerequisites for admission. Click on the brochure page for a complete listing of courses, programs and fees. WHERE: The Longboat Key Education Center is located at 5370 Gulf of Mexico Drive, Suite #212 at The Centre Shops on Longboat Key, Florida, a short drive from both Sarasota and Bradenton. Access for handicapped persons is provided. HISTORY & MISSION: Founded by Laura Taubes in 1985, The Longboat Key Education Center serves all adults regardless of residence or educational background. The Gallery at The Longboat Key Education Center is open to the public and exhibits works by local artists and faculty members on a rotating basis throughout the season. WHEN: The Longboat Key Education Center is open from October to mid-April. The program is divided into three terms: Fall, Winter and Spring.

REGISTRATION INFORMATION: You may register by e-mail any time
after the brochure has been posted in September by clicking on the

page, completing the requested information, and clicking the
SUBMIT button at the bottom of that page. However, because The Longboat
Key Education
Center cannot accept credit cards, your registration will not be complete
until we receive your check via U.S. mail or in person for the full amount
of the fees specified in the brochure. Many of our programs, especially in January and February, sell out months in advance, so please register as soon as possible to avoid disappointment. Applications will be accepted in the order in which they are received. Registration is not final until fees have been paid.

LONGBOAT KEY EDUCATION CENTER POLICES NOTICE OF NONDISCRIMINATORY POLICY AS TO STUDENTS The Longboat Key Education Center admits students of any race, color, national, or ethnic origin to all the rights, privileges, programs, and activities generally accorded or made available to students at this school. It does not discriminate on the basis of race, color, national, or ethnic origin in administration of educational policies, admissions policies, scholarship and loan programs, and athletic and other school-administered programs.
THE LONGBOAT KEY EDUCATION CENTER CODE OF STUDENT CONDUCT Rationale: The function of The Longboat Key Education Center (“School”) is to provide educational opportunities for adult students who choose to continue learning. To create an environment that lessens distractions and fosters learning, The Longboat Key Education Center has adopted and enforces this code of student conduct and the disciplinary procedures it contains. Although these procedures apply to all students, each case is evaluated individually. Students are subject to the rules and regulations of The Longboat Key Education Center while on its property. Classroom Removal: A teacher of any class may remove any student from the classroom if that student’s behavior interferes with classmates’ learning and enjoyment of the class. If removed, a student may not return to class without the School administration’s consent. Expulsion: A student may be denied the privilege of attending any class at The Longboat Key Education Center for the remainder of the semester or such other time as the administration deems appropriate. VIOLENT ACTS 1. Aggression – engaging in any behavior (by word or act) as an individual or as a member of a group that encourages, incites, or instigates threatening, aggressive, or unsafe acts. 2. Assault on student, School employee, or volunteer – the intentional, unlawful threat to do violence to another person coupled with an apparent ability to do so. 3. Battery on student, School employee, or volunteer (physical attack/harm) – the willful and unlawful use of force or violence upon the person of another. 4. Harassment – any continuing behavior, language, gesture, or overt act toward an employee or student which is based on the employee’s or student’s race, sex, age, religion, ethnic origin, or disability and which has the effect of creating embarrassment or discomfort for that person. The individual being harassed has an obligation to make the offending person aware that this conduct is offensive to him or her; sanctions may be applied after one such warning has been given. 5. Threats – any threat by word or act to do violence to another person. 6. Any act as determined by the School administration to be violent and/or against the best interests (physical, mental, or emotional) of another student, teacher, volunteer, School employee, or the School. DISRUPTIVE/INAPPROPRIATE BEHAVIOR 1. Disorderly conduct – any disruptive behavior that poses a threat to the learning, enjoyment, health, safety, and/or welfare of others. 2. Excessive distraction of other students – any behavior that disrupts classroom instruction or other activity presented by the School. 3. Tardiness – reporting late to class, particularly in a disruptive manner. 4. Sexual harassment – (undesired sexual behavior toward another). Unwanted or repeated verbal or physical sexual behavior that is offensive or objectionable to the recipient, causes discomfort or humiliation, or creates a hostile environment. 5. Use of obscene or profane manifestations toward another person. 6. Use of cellular phone or other device during a class session or at other times or locations where such use would disrupt learning. 7. Vandalism – willfully and maliciously damaging by any means any property belonging to another student, the School, or its employees. 8. Smoking anywhere on school premises (including restrooms). 9. Eating during any class session anything other than snacks provided to all students by or with the permission of a School employee. DISCRIMINATION The Longboat Key Education Center does not tolerate discrimination or harassment on the basis of race, sex, sexual orientation, color, religion, age, national origin, ethnicity, or disability. SCHOOL DRESS CODE Students are expected to come to school appropriately dressed for the business of learning with proper attention given to personal cleanliness, grooming, and neatness. Students whose personal attire or grooming distracts the attention of the students or teachers from their work shall be required to make the necessary alterations to such attire or grooming before entering the classroom or they may be dismissed from the classroom. Students who fail to meet the minimum acceptable standards of cleanliness, neatness, and decency as determined by School administration shall be subject to appropriate disciplinary measures. Anyone having questions regarding this Code of Student Conduct is encouraged to discuss them with School administration. |
