VISUAL ART IN AMERICA

The large immigration of Jews to the United States during the 20th Century had a tremendous influence on American modernism due to Jewish artists having an established cultural relationship to abstraction. WT11 THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN ART

AND HAUTE-COUTURE     NEW

     Kevin Costello

Designer clothing is the most common form of abstract art, and in many ways one of the world’s oldest. It expresses the personality of the designer, and by extension, the wearer, through pure color, shape and texture, to the same degree that painting and sculpture express the personality of the artist. These two lectures will trace the history and symbiotic relationship of art and fashion from as early as the votive statuettes of Tanagra, Greece, in the third century BCE to the fashion runways of Milan, London, Paris and New York.

WW7 AMERICA AND THE WORLD IN 2009

     Robert Garvin

We live in tumultuous times: a stupid war with very dangerous possible outcomes, vast budget and trade deficits and a weak dollar, a loss of economic power, a recession and a massive loss of respect from the rest of the world. We face classic problems: how to end the war in Iraq; how to reconcile Israel and the Palestinians to living side-by-side; how to live peacefully with Iran; how to defuse the North Korean time bomb; how to energize our own and the world’s economies; how to protect the world against global warming. This  course brings the collective experience and judgment of its students to bear on these world problems, in order to give helpful and effective guidance to the new U.S. administration. This course is an institution in and of itself — but always topical and current!

Robert Garvin was educated in Austria, England and the United States. After graduating from MIT, he worked for over 42 years for GE, where he was responsible for developing markets and trade policy issues with the U.S. government in many countries including China, the former Soviet Union, Belgium, Turkey, Germany, Italy, Britain, Israel, Japan and Korea.
